Boys Varsity Basketball · Raiders Win First District Title since 2015 with 63-60 Victory over Garfield

The Shaker Heights Raiders are your OHSAA DI Solon District champs!

The Raiders defeated number one seed, the Garfield Bulldogs, for the first time since

2015 when current West Virginia Mountaineers forward and former two time Mr.

Basketball Esa Ahmad was playing for the Raiders.

This game almost turned out like their last meeting on Dec 20th of this season. Shaker

gets out to a big lead and then Garfield storms back and wins, but not this time.  The Raiders

played their hearts out and were catapulted by the fans and student section.

Here is a video of the student section storming the court as the Raiders won:

Bulldog freshman phenom Meechie Johnson, who currently holds offers from Ohio State,

Louisville, and other big division 1 schools, scored a game high 20 points on 6 threes.

Mercyhurst University commit Alex Heath scored 13 points including a half court shot at the end

of the 3rd quarter to give the Bulldogs a lot of momentum going into the fourth.  Junior sensation

Alonzo Gaffney, who is ranked 29th in the ESPN top 60 and ranked number one in the 2019

class in Ohio, had 10 points.

The Raiders were lead by All-GCC honoree Christian Guess who finished with

19 points and shared a heartwarming moment with Head Coach Danny Young, who won his fifth

district title last night.  Sophomore forward Dakota Cochran was the second leading scorer with 14 points

knocking down 4 threes when the Raiders needed it.  Fairmont State commit Dale Bonner

finished with 13 points and senior guard Justin Phillips also contributed with 10 points on two

threes.  Senior forward Najee Hardaway scored only 3 points but played his tail off.  Standing only

6’2 he grabbed 9 rebounds and battled much-taller Alonzo Gaffney and Brison Waller who are at least 6 to

7 inches taller than him.

The Raiders advance to the Regional Semifinals for the first time since 2015 and will

take on the GCC champions, the Solon Comets standing at 24-1 on the year. The Comets

defeated the Raiders in both matchups this year by double digits.

Shaker vs Solon will be played on Wednesday, March 14th at the Wolstein Center at
