The Raiders defeated the Mentor Cardinals 108-95 behind Senior Christian Guess’s record setting night. Guess achieved a school record 57 points in the win.
The Raiders started out very slow, trailing the Cardinals 29-18 at the end of the first quarter. Cardinals Senior Matt Koski lead all scores with 14 at the end of the first. The entire first half was full of intense and chippy play that ultimately played in the Raiders favor. The Raiders rallied together and outscored the Cardinals 29-15 in the second quarter to take the 47-44 lead into the break. Guess lead all scores with 25 at halftime.
After the first quarter, the Raiders were simply too much for the Cardinals as they outscored them 90 to 66. The press wore down the Cardinals and after the Raiders took the lead they never looked back.
Guess dropped 57 points to set a school record that was previously held by Raiders alum Malcolm Sims who scored 55 points against Villa Angela St. Joe’s back in 1992. Guess did not make a three point shot and all of his 24 field goals were in the paint. He was also 9 for 11 at the
free throw line. Guess added 6 rebounds and 2 assists to cap off a superb performance.
The Raiders defense racked up 30 deflections with Junior Kevin Bishop having 7 to lead the team. Sophomore Dakota Cochran and Senior Dale Bonner both had 6 deflections.
The Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season to fall to 2-1. Senior Matt Koski collected a team high of 20 points. Junior Mason Trubisky had 16 points and Senior Shane Zalba added 15 to round out the majority of the scoring for the Cardinals.
The Raiders travel Wednesday to take on the # 1 ranked Garfield Heights Bulldogs.
