News · Lady Raiders rally to upset Mentor 49-46


The Shaker girls basketball team returned to their home court Wednesday night to try to gain some revenge against GCC rival and #4-ranked Mentor for an overtime loss suffered earlier this season.

The Lady Raiders and Lady Cardinals battled through a close first quarter with Mentor holding a 13-12 advantage.  Mentor gradually increased their lead to take a 27-22 edge at the half.   The Lady Cardinals came out to to start the 3rd quarter with a mini run that eventually pushed their lead to 10 points as the 3rd quarter buzzer sounded, 43-33.

The Lady Raiders dug down deep and turned up their intensity to start the 4th quarter.  Displaying a smothering and swarming defense, Shaker was able to force the Lady Cardinals into numerous turnovers and converted them into points at the other end to cut the Mentor lead to 43-40 with 5:25 left in the contest.  Back to back layups by Jamir Huston gave the Lady Raiders the lead at 46-45 and they were able to hold on with some big defensive stops for the huge conference victory.

The Lady Raiders, ranked #22 in the latest cleveland.com poll, improved their record to 8-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference.  They return to conference play at Strongsville Saturday evening at 7:30pm.
